What Are Fingersaves and How Do They Work?
Fingersaves, finger spines, and finger protection are all names for the same thing: plastic inserts built into the backhand of a goalkeeper glove that protect your fingers from hyperextension injuries.
Here is how they work. The spines allow your fingers to move forward naturally, so you can close your hand, make a fist, and catch the ball normally. But when pressure is applied backward, such as when you block a hard shot or land awkwardly on your hand, the spines stiffen and resist that movement. That resistance is what prevents the finger from bending too far back and causing a sprain, jam, or more serious injury.
One thing we want to clear up immediately: finger spines are plastic, not metal. This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is always the same. The spines are lightweight plastic, designed to flex naturally during normal play and lock under pressure.
Most modern goalkeeper gloves with finger protection feature individually removable spines, meaning you can take out one, some, or all of the spines depending on your preference. That flexibility makes them a practical choice for a much wider range of keepers than many people realize.
Who Should Use Goalkeeper Gloves with Finger Protection?
If a goalkeeper uses finger protection, it is very important to focus on how to properly catch the ball, knowing when to catch a hard shot cleanly and when to deflect it out of danger. Goalie gloves with finger protection are not an excuse to drop a shot or give up a rebound.
Goalkeeper gloves with finger protection are a strong choice for:
- Developing and youth goalkeepers who are still building hand strength and learning proper technique. During this phase, the hands and fingers are more vulnerable, and protection allows them to train and compete with more confidence.
- Keepers recovering from a finger or hand injury. Injured fingers are weakened and more susceptible to further damage. Finger protection acts as a recovery tool, keeping the hand safe while it heals without forcing the keeper to sit out.
- Goalkeepers facing very hard shots or playing for an older age group. Harder shots from close range can be painful as well as cause finger and hand injuries. Professional to youth goalkeepers may use finger protection just in practice when shooting sessions are designed for the striker’s success and not the goalkeepers.
- Players who are injury-prone or have naturally hypermobile joints. Some keepers simply have fingers that are more flexible than average, and finger protection gives them an added layer of stability throughout the season.
Our Top Finger Protection Brands
Goalkeepers of all ages and ability levels use gloves with finger protection. Some are developing their technique. Some are recovering from an injury. Some are facing hard shots at the youth level before their hands are fully ready. Whatever the reason, we carry the right option at every price point, and every brand below has been tested by our team under real conditions.
Reusch
Reusch is the industry standard for goalkeeper gloves with finger protection. The Ortho-Tec system is patented, tested, and specifically engineered to reduce finger and thumb-related injuries. Gebhard Reusch developed the first goalkeeper glove with a latex palm in history, and that commitment to innovation has never stopped.
Today, Reusch is worn by some of the best keepers in the world. Alisson Becker wears Reusch at Liverpool. Unai Simon represents the brand at Athletic Bilbao. Wojciech Szczesny wears the Attrakt Freegel Fusion Ortho-Tec, the same finger and thumb protection model available right here on this page.
Reusch offers two distinct finger protection systems. Ortho-Tec delivers the maximum level of protection and is ideal for injury recovery or keepers facing very powerful shots. Finger Support uses a lighter, more flexible spine system with better ball feel, suited for keepers who want meaningful protection without sacrificing dexterity. Reusch also produces dedicated junior Finger Support models for youth keepers, making them one of the most complete finger protection options in the game.

KPR Vector Guardian
The KPR Vector Guardian is KeeperStop's own in-house goalkeeper glove, built from the ground up by goalkeepers with decades of hands-on testing and development experience. This was not a quick private-label project. KPR was created with one clear mission: produce the best performing goalkeeper glove under $100, built to a standard we would be proud to recommend to any keeper we coach.
Every KPR glove is manufactured in Europe, sourced from one of the continent's leading glove manufacturers. That decision was deliberate. European manufacturing costs more, but it delivers superior latex quality, better backhand materials, and ethical working conditions. KPR chose not to manufacture in Pakistan. That choice reflects what we stand for as a company.
The Vector Guardian is the finger protection model in the KPR line. It carries a 4.8 to 5.0 star customer rating across the full KPR range, and it is currently on sale. If you are looking for the best goalkeeper glove with finger protection under $100, this is it.
Three models available: KPR Vector, KPR Vector Whiteout, and KPR Vector Guardian.

Sizing and Fit for Finger Protection Gloves
Finger protection gloves fit slightly differently than spineless gloves. The added backhand structure can affect how the glove sits on the hand, and getting the right size matters more than most keepers expect. Soccer goalie gloves with finger spines may feel tighter or even rub against the knuckles. Selecting the correct size is critical for maximum ball control and comfort.
How to measure your hand: Place your hand flat with the palm facing up. Measure from the tip of your middle finger down to the first crease at your wrist. That length determines your base size. The general rule is to round up and add one size for optimal comfort and performance. Your fingers should never touch the top of the glove. You want roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch of space at each fingertip.
Youth sizing guide:
- JR Size 4-5: Ages 7-9, approximately 4'6" to 4'8"
- JR Size 6-7: Ages 10-12, approximately 4'10" to 5'0"
- Size 7 Adult: Larger youth or small adults, approximately 5'2" to 5'4"
Brand fit varies. Elite Sport, Reusch, West Coast, The One Glove, and KPR all fit slightly differently within the same numeric size. If you are ordering for the first time from a new brand, we strongly recommend reaching out before you buy. Call or email Paul at 860-904-7679 or Paul@Keeperstop.com and we will size you correctly.

Caring for Your Finger Protection Gloves
A well-maintained pair of goalkeeper gloves lasts longer and performs better. Finger protection gloves have a few additional care considerations worth knowing.
- Clean between training sessions and games. If you have the time or another pair of gloves rinse the used pair in lukewarm water. Wash when really dirty and smelly. This removes dirt and debris and keeps the latex performing at its best and lasting longer.
- If your gloves have removable spines, take them out before washing. This protects the spine channels and allows the glove interior to dry more thoroughly.
- Hang dry or air dry flat with the palms facing outward. Keep them away from direct sunlight, radiators, and heat sources. Never put goalkeeper gloves in a dryer.
- Store in a breathable glove bag when completely dry with the spines in a neutral position. Do not leave them compressed in a kit bag or in a hot car.
- Recommended care products: Reusch Re:Invigorate Glove Wash and GloveGlu are both excellent options for maintaining latex grip and extending glove life.
